Sea Captain's First Mate
My Dearest Louise,
I see you salute and it makes me smile. It's been so long since I've seen you, it's just this little picture that keeps me company now.
We're in the middle of the Pacific, world's largest ocean now, and if we're in luck we'll be back to England before the rough winter weather, and the birth of our first. I'm counting the days till little Stephanie or Roger arrives.
Don't have any way of sending you this my lovely, you'll just have to read them all as soon as I give them to you myself. At least you'll have a written up daily captain's journal. It's really all I've got to do around here, nights, drink wine and listen to the creaking of the ship's boards, and the swell of the waves. She's a good trustworthy vessel she is, my old Mermaid. And she's brought us lots of seaman's luck. So here's to the true old vessel. May she carry us home ship safe and with a full hold.
